on 10 dumb things smart Christians believe
Finally going through 10 Dumb Things Smart Christians Believe by Larry Osborne. I've had it up on the shelfari wall for a while...finally getting a chance to really go through it. It's an intense book that is challenging many "Christianisms" that I have believed or said at some point....Found this to be particularly challenging to the soul:
Chapter 6: Dumb Idea: Everything Happens for a Reason
On discussing his wife's battle with cancer:
" Yet more disconcerting than all the unsolicited advice was the 'happy talk' of those who tried to assure us Nancy's cancer was a blessing in disguise.....their words varied, but the message was always the same: someday you'll be glad this happened. We were told...
-" God must be up to something."
-"God doesn't make mistakes."
-"You must be very special for God to trust you with this."
-"Won't it be great to see how God uses this?"
-"isn't it good to know that everything happens for a reason?"
In one sense they were absoloutely right. No matter what happens, God is in control. He's the King of the universe. And he's good.
But that doesn't mean he's the direct cause of everything that happens. It doesn't mean that everything that happens is something he wants to happen. And it certainly doesn't mean that everything he allows is good.
